Lean workstations are designed for minimum wasted motions. With a lean wokstation everything must be choreographed like an orchestra.
Traditionally workstations are laid out for materuial handler's convenience and the value adding operators were not given the priority.

Lean and Clean Production Systems - Industrial Engineering Solution


Lean and clean companies boost productivity by eliminating inefficiency, streamlining production, improving the workplace environment, and increasing wages. Lean and clean companies become supremely competitive. The environmentally proactive companies had higher return on investment, higher sales growth, and higher operating income.
Many practices of energy efficiency and clean production are compatible. Both  have the same goal; systematically reducing waste. In the case of lean production  the waste is wasted time, and the measures of
inefficiency are high inventories, defects, and customer complaints. In clean production, the measure of inefficiency is pollution - air pollution, water pollution, and solid waste. If a
company has successfully  reduced waste and implmented lean,  lean and clean management is the next step in the ongoing process of increasing profits and productivity.

Henry Ford was obsessed with minimizing  wast of resource and time, His 1926 book Today and Tomorrow, reviews his many approaches to reducing waste.

Industrial engineers get jobs as production engineers, supply chain managers, operations analysts, quality engineers and information system specialists. They work for any business, company, governmental agency, or service oriented enterprise that wants improved operations and reduced costs.

Many IE's start their own companies or go into consulting.

More Industrial Engineering Studies on Lean Manufacturing Systems

Yash Dave and Nagendra Sohani in the paper "The Journey of Lean Manufacturing: Literature Review" published in Udyog Pragati, April-June 2011, Pp.22-34, stated that lean manufacturing term was coined by MIT researchers to describe the collection of efficiency improvements that Toyota Motors adopted. Because of its origin at Toyota Motors the same collection of improvement has also been called teh "Toyoto Production System."
Industrial engineering provided a great boost to productivity of the production systems in the early two decade of the 20th century. Management thinkers like Peter Drucker acknowledge the contribution of Taylor in developing differential wage plans, means of identifying better methods at elements level, time study to estimate task times, scientific study manual as well as machine methods etc. Industrial engineering once again made a great contribution to the manufacturing systems by coming up with SMED and the resultant lean manufacturing system.
Industrial engineers are continuing the task by doing further studies on lean manufacturing systems.

        According to Taylor, scientific management's birthplace is his paper "A Piece-Rate System," read by him in 1895. It being a step toward partial solution of the labor problem, Taylor fixed age of scientific management as  17 years in 1912.

        But Taylor's definitive work, The Principles of Scientific Management was  first published in 1911. Hence in 2011, scientific management completes its 100 years and 1910-11 is the centenary year of scientific management.

        Mark S. Sanders and Ernest J. McCormick, in the book Human Factors in Engineering and Design, seventh edition (1993),  provide the following definition for human factors. This definition according them is slightly modified version of the definition provided by Chapanis (1985)
         
        'Human factors discovers and applies information about human behavior, abilities, limitations, and other characteristics to the design of tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs, and environments for productive, safe, comfortable, and effective human use." (Page 5)

        1. Decrease the weight of objects handled (Order supplies in smaller-quantity containers)
        2. Use two or more people to move heavy or large objects.
        3. Change the way of doing the activity; for example, pull or, better yet, push rathe than carry.
        4. Minimize horizontal distance travelled with the load.
        5. Stack materials no higher than shoulder height.
        6. Keep heavy objects at knuckle height.
        7. Reduce frequency of lifting.
        8. Incorporate rest periods.
        9. Incorporate job rotation to less strenuous jobs.
        10. Design containers with handles that can be held close to the body.
         
        Safe-lift Principles
         
        Maintain a straight bakc, use leg muscles, keep the load as close to the body as possible, use smooth body motion, avoid jerking, and turn the feet rather than twisting the torso. (Foot note, Sanders and McCormick, 1993, p. 268).
